Chapter Seventeen

The Theft

Lilja’s sleeping body was growing restless in the real world, and Kaden, in turn, was growing anxious. There was a moment when she’d gasped so harshly in reaction to a memory’s recovery, that she’d jarred him from his wandering thoughts, and violently so. He’d found himself half-risen out of his chair and leaned over her with a protective reflex.

The sudden snaps of movement from them both spurred the weaver to flinch.

“Keepa! Settle down now!” she demanded harshly. The more jumpy he grew, the more irritated and distracted Oscine was becoming.

Kaden didn’t look up. Oscine wasn’t his concern. He was watching his princess carefully as she slowly came down from whatever shock she’d experienced. He wondered so desperately where she was in her time-line.

But based on her reactions of late, he could make an educated guess.

Oscine took a deep breath to help settle her nerves before starting up with him.

“Really though, keepa,” she voiced calmly. “Ya need to settle down. Ya princess be fine. This a part of it.”

After another moment of exploring Lilja’s face, an action he must have done a hundred times by now with no new insight ever gleaned, he sat back in his chair with a heavy sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Kaden hated being out of control when it came to her well-being. It wasn’t serving him well, he was coming to find, being at the weaver’s mercy and having Lilja subject to discomfort.

This whole experience was creating the perfect storm, ushering in a torrent of memories that the keeper had always been vigilant to keep away.
